Postpartum Hair loss

My Story

So all through pregnancy my hair really slowed it’s growth, normally my hair grows really fast and is reasonably thick but this was not the case when I was pregnant. Nor were my nails great, which is also interesting as normally they are long and strong. So often we get told that your hair and nails grow beautifully in pregnancy oh and then the “glow”! Well I did have the glow but not the other so when I had my son, my hair and nails went back to growing really well and I wasn’t really losing hair and so I naively thought I might have dodged the hair bullet, so to speak. But right on 4 months postpartum, my hair started shedding like crazy! Apparently this is common but still it's not nice seeing so much hair come out of your head. My baby always had it in his hands and on him, my husband jokes that he accidentally eats me often bahaha! I am now 7 months postpartum and it has started to grow back (wispy bits all around my temples, growing myself a crown 🤣) and I am losing closer to my normal amount.

Before and After

What is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Postpartum hair loss refers to the excessive shedding of hair that often occurs in the months following childbirth. During pregnancy, increased hormone levels cause hair to remain in the growing phase for longer than usual, resulting in thicker and fuller locks. However, after giving birth, hormone levels drop significantly, leading to a higher proportion of hair entering the resting and shedding phases, resulting in noticeable hair loss.

Causes of Postpartum Hair Loss:

Several factors contribute to postpartum hair loss:

1. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy hormones, such as estrogen, prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle. Once hormone levels return to normal after childbirth, the hair cycle resets, causing increased shedding.

2. Telogen Effluvium: The body undergoes significant physiological changes during pregnancy and childbirth, including physical stress. Telogen effluvium is a condition where stress disrupts the hair growth cycle, leading to excessive shedding.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies: Pregnancy and breastfeeding can deplete essential nutrients from the body, leading to nutritional imbalances that can affect hair health.

Tips for Dealing with Postpartum Hair Loss:

1. Be Patient:

Remember that postpartum hair loss is a temporary condition that typically resolves within a few months. Understanding that this shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle can help alleviate anxiety and stress.

2. Maintain a Healthy Diet:

Ensure you're consuming a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Focus on foods containing iron, zinc, biotin, and omega-3 fatty acids, which promote healthy hair growth. Consult with your healthcare provider or a nutritionist for personaised dietary recommendations.

I personally have started taking the Kin Postnatal to make sure I am getting all the micronutrients I need and I also take a Collagen supplement which has not only improved my hair but also my skin. My faves are Imbibe Miracle Collagen and the Collagen Co.

3. Gentle Hair Care:

Washing hair in shower

Handle your hair gently during this phase. Avoid excessive brushing, tight hairstyles, and heat styling tools, as they can further damage fragile hair. Opt for wide-toothed combs or brushes with soft bristles to prevent breakage. Also the Shampoo and Conditioner you use needs to be nourishing and not too heavy. I have been using Georgiemane for a while now and love what it does for my hair. It's aloe vera based, hydrating, protects and repairs. the 10 Minute Mask is amazing!

4. Consider a New Hairstyle:

Choosing a shorter hairstyle or one that adds volume can create an illusion of thicker hair and make the shedding less noticeable. Speak with a hairstylist who can suggest flattering options that suit your preferences.

5. Seek Professional Advice:

If you're concerned about the severity or duration of your postpartum hair loss, it's advisable to consult a dermatologist or a trichologist. They can assess your condition, rule out any underlying issues, and provide personalised advice and treatment options.

6. Take Care of Your Overall Well-being:

Nurturing your physical and emotional well-being is crucial during this time. Prioritize self-care, get sufficient rest, and manage stress through activities like yoga, meditation, or gentle exercise. Remember, a healthy mind and body contribute to healthy hair.

Hair accessories

7. Embrace Hair Accessories:

Incorporate stylish headbands, scarves, or hair clips into your daily hairstyles to add flair and disguise thinning areas. Experimenting with accessories can help boost your confidence while your hair grows back.
