Swing your Partner, Dosey Doe...Our Big Spring Bush Dance
Introduction:
Ok so how many of you can say they have been to a bush dance? How many of you can say you've been to a bush dance recently?? I did attend (and sing at) a bush dance only last weekend and it was such a great time. There were quite a few people there and so many danced! It really made me realise how much people are wanting community events and to have a bit of fun.
What is a Bush Dance?
A bush dance is a fun and social event where people of all ages come together to dance to traditional Australian folk music. The dances are typically simple and easy to learn, making them perfect for everyone, from complete beginners to experienced dancers.
Here's a fun way to think about it:
Imagine a big, outdoor party with a live band playing lively tunes. People of all ages are gathered around, laughing and chatting. Some are sitting on hay bales, others are standing in small groups. But as soon as the music starts, everyone jumps up and starts dancing!
That's what a bush dance is all about! It's a chance to let loose, have some fun, and enjoy the company of friends and family.
Our Big Spring Bush Dance
The Bush Dance that I was a part of was put on by the Choir I am in, Soul Factor Gospel Choir. My parents run the choir and so are always doing events but back before the choir began, Mum and Dad would put on Bush Dances. So I’ve been to quite a few in my life and they wanted to give it a go again.
It was held at the Echunga Memorial Institute which is a wonderful community hall, set in the Adelaide Hills. The live music and calling of the dances was by Ian Mundy and the Burning Bush Band and then Soul Factor sang in between the groups of dances.
There were quite a few people there and the dance floor was always packed. Which was amazing, you just don't see that very often! For the first dance, Ian asked people onto the floor and most of the room got up, there was barely any room on the floor. People of all ages then learnt the dances, and danced together, changing partners and sometimes in groups, sometimes all together and the smiles were everywhere.
There were quite a few children there and they had a ball. The adults were wonderful joining them in and they all had a great time. Even my son Oscar, although only 9 months, had a wonderful time. Up past his bedtime but just bouncing along to the music and excited about the dancing and the lights, it was gorgeous.
The feedback we got was nothing but positive and so many people said they would be back for the “next one” which wasn’t planned haha but you never know, maybe next year! I was just really struck by how much people seem to want to go to these type of events. Good clean fun, community and good music are something all ages can share.
Here are a few more fun things about bush dances:
The dress code is casual, so you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
You don't need to be a good dancer to enjoy yourself. The dances are simple and easy to learn, and there's always someone willing to help you out.
Bush dances are a great way to meet new people and make friends. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and it's a chance to socialise with people of all ages and backgrounds.
Bush dances are often held in beautiful outdoor settings, such as parks, community halls, and even backyards. It's a great way to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
So if you're looking for a fun and social event to enjoy with friends and family, be sure to check out a bush dance near you. You won't be disappointed!
