Mums, let's be honest – how many barely-used skincare products are currently gathering dust in your bathroom cabinet? That expensive serum your best friend swore by, the cleanser that was supposed to "change everything," the moisturiser with incredible reviews that somehow left your skin feeling worse than before.
If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. And chances are, your teenage daughter is experiencing the exact same frustration.
As women, we've all been there – excitedly purchasing a highly recommended skincare product only to find it makes our skin irritated, breaks us out, or simply doesn't deliver the promised results. It's frustrating and expensive.
And now we're watching our daughters fall into the same trap, but with an added twist – the overwhelming influence of social media making the problem exponentially worse.
Just last week, I sat with a mum whose bathroom counter had become a product graveyard of half-used bottles and tubes. She was frustrated not just because of the wasted money, but because her own skin wasn't improving despite trying "all the right things." Meanwhile, her 13-year-old daughter was experiencing the same disappointment with products she'd discovered through TikTok and Instagram.
The reality? What works beautifully for one woman might be completely wrong for another, regardless of age. This fundamental truth applies whether you're 43 or 13.
Here's what twenty years of working with women of all ages has taught me: understanding your unique skin type changes everything.
When we use products that aren't right for our skin type, we often experience:
Unexpected breakouts (yes, even in our 40s!)
Increased sensitivity and irritation
Disruption of our skin's natural balance
Excessive oil production or extreme dryness
Accelerated aging signs
Wasted money and growing frustration
And if this happens to us as adults with decades of skincare experience, imagine how overwhelming it is for our teens who are just beginning their skincare journey.

Something I wish I'd understood earlier in my skincare journey is how dramatically our skin changes throughout different life stages.
During the teen years, hormonal fluctuations can lead to:
Increased oil production
Acne and breakouts
Sensitivity and redness
Rapid healing but also rapid reactions to wrong products
As we move into our 20s and 30s:
Hormonal patterns shift
Stress begins to impact skin appearance
Environmental damage starts showing
Early signs of aging may appear
And as we continue into our 40s and beyond:
Estrogen decreases, affecting skin elasticity
Cell turnover slows down
Moisture retention decreases
Previous sun damage becomes more visible
What worked for your skin at 16 won't necessarily work at 30, 40, or beyond. And as mothers, this gives us a unique opportunity – to share wisdom with our daughters while continuing to adapt our own routines to our changing needs.
People often comment on my skin now, but it hasn't always been this way. When I was a teen, I was obsessed with makeup and skincare products, just like many of today's teens.
For my 13th birthday, my mum made what turned out to be a brilliant decision – she booked me into a Mary Kay Beauty Class. Instead of just adding more products to my collection, I learned:
How to identify what my skin actually needed
The importance of a consistent routine
That removing makeup before bed isn't optional!
The real meaning of "less is more" with makeup
This foundation of knowledge was so valuable that I ended up becoming a Mary Kay Consultant for over 15 years!
But my skin journey hasn't been without challenges. Over the years, my skin has had its ups and downs, including a stressful period when I developed warts on my face as a reaction to extreme stress.
Through it all, those fundamental principles I learned at 13 have been my guiding light. And that's exactly what I want to pass on to your teens.
Beyond products and routines, our lifestyle choices dramatically impact our skin:
Sleep: Those late-night TikTok scrolling sessions? They're showing up on your teen's face the next morning.
Hydration: Most teens aren't drinking enough water, leading to dehydrated skin that overproduces oil to compensate.
Diet: The connection between certain foods and skin reactions is real, though it varies person to person.
Stress: Academic pressure, social anxiety, and other stressors can trigger inflammatory skin responses.
Helping your teen understand these connections gives them agency over their skin health beyond just what products they use.
After 20+ years working with teens and their skin, I've identified the most common mistakes that damage both their skin and confidence:
Product overload: Using too many products disrupts their skin microbiome (the good bacteria that protect their skin).
The makeup cover-up trap: Heavy makeup might hide things temporarily, but often makes underlying issues worse.
Skipping nighttime cleansing: Sleeping in makeup lets skin marinate in dirt and bacteria.
Over-exfoliating: Scrubbing too frequently damages the skin barrier.
The good news? Your teen doesn't need a 12-step routine or expensive products to have healthy, glowing skin.
When I work with teens, I always start with just three essential steps:
Cleansing: Removing dirt, oil, and bacteria that cause breakouts
Moisturising: Keeping skin balanced (yes, even oily skin needs this!)
Protection: Preventing damage that can affect skin for years to come
Starting small means your teen is more likely to stick with it. And consistency beats complexity every time when it comes to skincare.
